Corso and Smith Champions at LGR!

August 31, 2001; Lake Geneva, WI. - It was the final night to the weekly Friday night 2001 race program at Lake Geneva Raceway. 1999 Mid American champion Rick Corso of McHenry, Illinois was declared the 2001 Millennium Late Model champion as Trevor’s Tommy Nevoso scored a clean sweep of the divisions events. Al Smith of Rockford, IL.won his first championship in the Perfection Auto Body Legend Cars with the feature going to Clayton Kruse of Burlington.

Don Spiewak (#10) won the Indy Pro main event at LGR Friday.

Neil Gillentine finished off just his like first appearance back on May 18th.the season opener, by taking a clean sweep of Formula Indy racing association events. Ken Johnson of Paddock Lake is making sure he has a cushion in the season points that end September 28th. as the defending Herb’s mini modified champion took a clean sweep. In mini cup competition Brian Baldyga won the feature. Tom Ross of Wadsworth,IL. won the Sideline Motorsports sport truck feature for the second week in a row. Todd Booker of Hebron,IL. scored a clean sweep of Basic International action and moved back in front of his competitors in the point standings.

It took Todd Booker ten laps to get through traffic and into the lead.The task wasn’t easy as twenty cars started the event with only three dropping out of the 15 lap feature. Second in points just forty five behind Booker, Jeff Baum took second Bruce Barry was back his race car finishing third. Bill Webb was fourth with Randy Schneider fifth in this close contest.

Brian Baldyga was denied a clean sweep after taking second in the dash but after an intense battle for the lead with Rich Dawson until lap nine before taking the lead and going on to win the mini cup feature over Ken Jones Tim Toussaint Dick Behrendt and Dawson in another good feature race.

Only the rookies had problems in the mini modified feature as Bill Trusky grabbed the lead at the off set of this feature.Rich Musgrave gave the leader lots of pressure until lap six when fast timer Ken Johnson inched by. Three laps later it was all Johnson again taking the victory six laps later with trusky second Mike VanHouten a close third Jim Morrison fourth and Joe Miller fifth.

Other than a lap one caution for a Lyle Kuklinski and Larry Will get together it was non stop action in the legends feature as Clayton Kruse took the lead on lap four after starting seventh row inside. Quick qualifier and crowned champion Al Smith didn’t let Kruse’s efforts come easy taking a close second with Curt Gnatzig right there in third.Brad Popp was fourth and Herman Greinig fifth.

It was announced that the awards banquet now with a point fund for regular divisions would be Saturday night January 19th. at Rampoles banquet facility in Twin Lakes.

The mini modified championship will be Friday night September 28th. part of the Small Car World championship.The sport trucks will be Sept.15th.

And the BIC cars on Sept,29th.and 30th.during the O’Doul’s October Classic,this year in September.
