Greg Sheldon Wins First BIC Feature! By Dale Erdmann

August 24, 2001; Lake Geneva, WI. - It was a perfect evening for stock car races and the family fun night on Friday ngith, brought out a good size crowd at Lake Geneva Raceway. Greg Sheldon of Crystal Lake,IL. jumped in the Bruce Barry car and won the 20 lap Basic International Car feature. Point leader Al Smith of Rockford,IL. crashed hard on Wednesday at Rockford speedway but had everything corrected for his  fast time and second straight 20 lap feature win for the Perfection Auto Body Legend Cars.

Defending track championship Russ Blakeley of Palmyra won the 15 lap millennium late model feature. Another defending champion Ken Johnson of Paddock Lake was back in his own Herb’s mini modified and won the 15 lap feature by nearly a quarter lap over his competition. Rookie driver Tom Ross of Wadsworth,IL.won his second 15 lap Sideline motorsports sport truck feature and Kelly Bires won the 25 lap Great Lakes Allison legacy series feature contest.

Before long it looked like Sheldon was on a mission moving into the second spot before lap nine was completed. Webb and Sheldon raced side by side for the next go round before the lead changed. The next ten laps were extremely tight but after numerous challenges from Webb and then Tony Burrafato.Sheldon pulled off a win. Todd Booker who had problems and then never qualified won a semi and finished fourth in the main event. Randy Schneider was fifth.

The Great Lakes Allison cars started eighteen with the first lap pretty rocky. A complete restart ensued as the non stop event brought Kelly Bires in front where he stayed through the next twenty five laps. Eric Darnell took a close second Morgan Keil was third with Chris Bires Chad Davison and Keith Tolf next.

Ryan Carlson lead the first ten laps with challenges from Joe Scala then Brad Popp and Al Smith with the race at the top even after Smith slipped in front on lap eleven.Carlson held onto second until lap twelve as Curt Gnatzig got by .The last four laps were great as Smith held on for the win Gnatzig was second with Clayton Kruse at his side for third with Carlson fourth and Brad Popp fifth.

Jeff Schultz moved in front of the mini modified feature with Tim Castle and Bruce Brandenburger next.Quickly Ken Johnson who started near the rear of the field was coming on strong taking over the top spot on lap two. Schultz held onto second until lap seven when Joe Miller moved past.Roy Morrison in his son’s mount didn’t let Miller out of his sights taking over second on lap nine. The race went to Johnson nearly a straightaway ahead Miller held onto second with Schultz Mike Van Houten and Bill Trusky completing the top five.

Russ Blakeley jumped in front of the millennium late model feature at the drop of the green and never looked back winning the event over point leader Rick Corso, Tommy Nevoso, Paul Dygon, Chris Mathers and Steve Maciosek.

The sport truck feature brought Chad Ross in front of the field before Tom Ross took over the top spot on lap eight. Chad didn’t like that move and slipped back in front before the lap was over. Jamie Everett had problems and received the black flag as the truck smoked in each corner.

It was a see/saw battle for the front spot until Tom Ross took the win over Chad point leader Vincent  Merry fast timer Bill Olson and Todd Ross.

Next Friday night marks the season championship races for the sport trucks millennium late models and legend cars. Championship points will continue for the mini modifieds and BIC cars. The Formula Indy racing association and the mini cup cars will also be here for the final Friday of the season. Time trials begin at 6 pm. racing at 7:30 p.m. sharp.
