May wins No Bull Series feature!
Potter Triple Crown Series winner!
By Dale Erdmann |
August 18, 2001; Lake Geneva, WI. - Eddie May of Crystal Lake, Illinois the 1984 champion at Lake Geneva Raceway won
the 50 lap feature for the super late model cars on the Five Star Race car bodies triple
Crown No Bull series night Saturday.
The show sponsored by Burlington Farmers Supply as May became the third
different winner of the series features walking away with $1000 in a strong win.Landry
Potter the divisions defending champion and current point leader won the series first
feature on June 16th finishing overall the best in the three dates before being declared
the series champion.
Adam Regnier of Richmond,IL. won the McHenry Limo super stock feature
for 25 laps. The non stop event was his first win of the season. Jerry Freeman of Lyons
won his second Performance Unlimited sportsman feature of the season. The event went 25
laps as many visitors were on hand due to the WIR rainout. The show was completed at
9:55pm. with a few minute rain delay just as the super late model feature was to begin.
Wayne Freimund one of rookies in this division slipped in front of
the super late model feature with Kent Burkoth Randy Rodgers and Rick Corso behind
him.Burkoth inched ahead at the line on lap two with Freimund now taking the inside as Joe
Fischer and Fran Prestay joined the fray at the front.Freiminds persistence paid off
regaining the lead on lap six. From then until lap nine it was nearly a dead heat for the
lead as Burkoth led the next go round.
There was another side by side battle behind the these two with third place Corso just
waiting for an opportunity to grab the top spot. Shuffling for positions on lap ten
Freimund forged in front with Burkoth feeling Rodgers at his side with Corso now fourth.
On lap eleven the first three rows were side by side for their positions in a flawless
race. Burkoth moved in front two laps later and by lap nineteen the top seven were under a
blanket as the crowd was treated to so of the best racing of the season.
Rodgers worked on Freimund but there was no change until lap
fourteen as Rodgers maneuvered his way into second. It was too close to call all the way
back to tenth as Rodgers crept up on the inside of the leader. Two laps later Rodgers was
the leader for a split second after Burkoth spun wildly onto the infield out of the way as
the race continued after contact up front. Freimund used all his horse power to take
control of that top spot again before the lap had ended.
Right behind the leader it was another hotly contested race with Rodgers
feeling the pressure from Corso, Fischer and Landry Potter. It took Rodgers three laps to
move back in front with Eddie May entering the top four on lap thirty. Within three
laps May was on a mission to the front as he and Freimund raced side by side On lap thirty
six it was Rodgers and May show at the front. With just ten laps to go May climbed in
front of the field with Jerry Mueller working on Potter.
May walked way with the win as Rodgers held back Freimund, Mueller and Potter for a real
barn burner. A post race inspection dropped Mueller from the finish as Corso was then
credited with fifth. Mueller's weight percentage did not add up even though he was fifty
pounds heavy overall.
Mike Bell held on to the lead of the super stock feature for two laps before Aaron
Williams moved in front. Two laps later Adam Regnier slipped in front Willms held onto
second until lap nineteen when Trevor Mock went past him. It was quite the race for second
through tenth as Regnier easily won the event over Mock a rookie in his best finish to
date. Mike Kooi was third with Doug Peterson and Willms a second year driver next.
Ken Joosten a rookie in the sportsman class shot out front with Zac Deeringer next with
Mike Monroe and Dan Erickson in a tie for third. On lap eleven Mike DeKeuster and Shawn
Utphall tangled bringing the race to a halt. On lap later fast timer Monty Coffman went
flat on the restart and everyone but Utphall and DeKeuster missed him causing the another
delay.
Finally underway Joosten moved back in front with Deeringer scooting in front two laps
later just before a spin by Denny Norton Jr. and this produced another caution. The final
caution came on lap nineteen as Deeringer and Monroe got together. On the restart Joosten
was again the leader with a mixing of cars with three laps to go as Jerry Freeman became
the leader and winner of the event. Joosten was second with James Swan, Terry Crowell and
point leader Mike Lange next.
This coming Monday night the Lions Club great race number two takes place with time trials
at 6pm. races at 7pm. Then next Saturday night Burlington camper and travel and Hi Liter
Graphics presents the final "Trailer Race" of the year. The sportsman join the
super late models and super stocks in a full race program. Time trials begin at 6 pm.
racing at 7:30 pm. sharp.
