Wallace
wins in Super Late Model action at LGR!
Peterson takes career first Super Stock
feature victory!
By Dale Erdmann |
August 4, 2001; Lake Geneva, WI. - There was a full moon as Discount mufflers and brakes sponsored the Saturday
Night race program as Jamie Wallace the 1992 late model champion from Pell Lake won his
first 35 lap super late model Feature of the season surviving six caution flags that
plagued the event. Doug Peterson of Antioch,Illinois a mild mannered veteran driver won
his first 25 lap McHenry Limo super stock feature of his career and Racine driver Shawn
Upthall won his second Performance Unlimited sportsman feature this event went 24 laps.
The super late model feature wasnt even one lap old when
former legends driver Ron Stoehr got wide creating a situation that could have gotten ugly
but everyone pulled it off to contniue another lap. Jerry Mueller moved in front with Kent
Burkoth all over the leader. On lap three Jerry Cowan and Jeff Lornez tangled bringing out
the first cautions. Two laps later Mueller was still in front but Chuck Duncan and Ryan
Matthews got together for the next slowdown.
On the restart Wayne Freimund moved around Mueller who had been warned for crossing the
line.Freimund led the next three laps before Mueller moved in front again. Out came the
black flag as Mueller crossed the line one too many times for starter Dave Rex liking.
Mueller had no where to go as Freimund regained the lead before Mueller spun in turn two
bringing out another caution.
On the restart Jamie Wallace out ran Freimund to turn one and
there was another new leader on lap twelve. Quickly Terry Patnode moved into second with
Freimund Burkoth and now Matt Kocourek all over each other for another position
forward.Only three more laps went in the book before Rick Corsos mount went flat as
everyone scattered but Denny Hiffman nipped him before the next caution was shown.
Patnode tried to out race Wallace to the corner but that didnt happen. But two laps
later Billy Baumeister left the track in turn four stopping the action again. On the
restart it was Wallace Patnode and now Burkoth glued together.
Kocourek was waiting in the wings to advance forward as this threesome put on a nice
little show for the lead.Meanwhile Landry Potter got past Fischer and Freimund with
everyone really tight.Within five laps Kocourek got past Patnode and then started
challenging Burkoth for second. It was a see/saw drama unfolding as the crowd went wild
wondering who would win or take second.Meanwhile Wallace was setting a smooth pace.On lap
twenty eight Potter slowed quickly with problems heading for the pits one lap later.Within
a few laps Burkoth started to get loose and Kocourek got by.
Just as Kocourek moved in on the leader Eddie May and Corso spun and the intense pace was
halted with the final caution appearing just as the white flag came out. This created a
green/white/checkered situation that Wallace took to the bank for the win. Burkoth out ran
Kocourek to the wire with Fischer and Patnode completing the top five.
Scott Peterson had his hood fly off with a complete restart ensuing. Greg Janutka held the
lead one lap before Mike Olson charged in front.Mike Bell was behind Janutka with Aaron
Willms next. The event still looked like a parade lap with eight laps in the books but
Doug Peterson was on the move.gaining third on lap nine and second on lap ten with Olson
way out front.
Now Peterson had Mike Kooi to contend with as Adam Regnier worked on Koois back
side. The one and only caution appeared for Koois stalled mount. On the restart
Peterson worked on the leader with Pete Olson and now John Janssen behind him.Entering lap
twenty one Peterson drew even with Olson but until the white flag lap it looked like there
would be no changes in the positions. Peterson pulled off the win with just before his
right rear axle broke. Pete Olson was second, with Mike Olson,John Janssen and fast
qualifier Jack Rubach fifth.
Just as the green flag came out for the sportsman main event Dan Erickson dropped out with
problems. Shawn Utphall charged in front with Mark Guess Brian Baker and Ken Jossten next.
Within three laps Baker was right on Utphalls bumper with Zac Deeringer and Denny
Norton Jr. fighting for third. Mike Lange joined the tight field up front gaining fifth on
lap seven.
Baker inched ahead on lap that lap but Utphall was bound and determined to move in front
again. One lap later it was a dead heat for that spot.Lange got around Deeringer on lap
nineteen but one lap later Deeringer moved back into third. On the white flag lap Baker
gave it one last shot and held the lead at the line. Coming around for the checkered
Utphall slipped in front for the win at the wire as Baker held back point leader Lange who
nipped Deeringer and Norton was fifth in another close feature tonight.
This coming Saturday night Woodward Trucking Company presents the Five Star Stock car Body
Second No bull series show of the season. The super late model feature will pay $1000 to
win .The Sport trucks will join the super stocks and super late models. Time trials begin
at 6 pm racing at 7:30 pm sharp. A large field of super late models cars from Grundy
County and other tracks are expected to take on the LGR regulars.
