By Dale Erdmann

July 28, 2001; Lake Geneva, WI. With rain all around the area it wasn’t the largest crowd of the season but the non-stop super late model feature for 35 laps was an excellent contest on Saturday night at Lake Geneva Raceway, as former champion Fran Prestay of Silver Lake jumped in another race car and won his Second feature of the year. Jack Rubach of Burlington took fast time for the thirteenth week in arrow and won his second straight 25 lap McHenry Limo super stock feature. Doug Peterson (#63) spins his machine as the field scatters to avoid contact during the Super Stock feature race.

Rookie Jeff Way the 2000 Legends champion moved in front of the field at the drop of the green flag with Joel Clossey the 1999 sportsman champion at his side. It was tight behind the top two with Fran Prestay Jeff Lorenz the 2000 super stock champion and Jerry Cowan next.Prestay crept into second on lap five with Way about three cars ahead. It didn’t take long before Prestay was trying to get under Way and on lap nine the lead changed hands. Cowan was up to third with Billy baumeister Wayne Freimund and Eddie May closing.

On lap thirteen Baumeister got wide and May moved under as Cowan slipped to fifth. The second through eleventh position looked like a parade lap with no one giving an inch. May gained third on lap sixteen as Prestay in the Jerry Straube mount was about three cars ahead of Way. On lap twenty May inched ahead of Way.One lap later Brad Durbin starting to move up fast overhauling Way on lap twenty two.May was within a cars length of the leader by lap twenty five but the 1984 champion knew time was running out. On lap twenty eight Freimund challenged Way for his spot. Two laps later Denny Hiffman, Baumeister and Cowan made contact but everyone continued and everyone got through the melee.

The final three laps were close but the veteran Prestay won the contest over May, Durbin, Way, as Jamie Wallace nipped Freimund for fifth.

The super stock feature was just three laps old when Tom Fay dumped liquid around the surface bringing the race to a halt. Scott Eggebrecht who led the opening laps scooted in front again with Trevor Mock and Mike Kooi fighting for second. Doug Peterson spun on lap seven bringing out the next caution just as Kooi took over the lead. On the next green Andy Szymanskyj picked the right lane on the cone restart and moved in on Kooi. Scott Scholl was right on the former leader tail and Mock looked for an opening.

On lap twelve Szymanskyj could feel the pressure of Jack Rubach who slipped behind the runner up. Three laps later Rubach was looking at the leader with a tight pack behind him.Scholl had Dave Melahn all over him and his team partner Adam Regnier tried the inside of the fourth place runner. Szymanskyj tried Rubach as they worked on the leader.Rubach put the pressure on Kooi until lap nineteen that’s when the lead changed. One lap later rookie Mike Gunderson smashed into the wall bringing out the final caution.

On the restart second year driver Rubach walked Kooi and Melahn to the corner and never looked back for his third win of the season. Melahn nipped Kooi for second with Regnier fourth and Scholl fifth.

Dan Erickson charged in front of the sportsman feature with with Mark Guess Jocko Terrault and rookie Ken Joosten all over the leader. There was some shuffling on lap four and the lead changed two laps later as Terrault took over the top spot.Guess spun on lap seven and out came the caution. When the green reappeared Terrault had Denny Norton Jr. and point leader Mike Lange challenging for the lead.

Zac Deeringer joined the group one lap later with a tight battle ensuing. Lange moved along side Terrault for the lead and on lap thirteen there was a new leader. Deeringer got around Terrault two laps later ,with fast timer Jerry Freeman following three laps later. Then Norton and Shawn Utphall moved around Terrault on lap nineteen. Lange hung on for the win with Deeringer holding back Freeman as Norton Jr. and Utphall fifth.

This coming Saturday night August 4th. Hi Liter Graphics of Burlington will sponsor the annual pit crew contest for the three divisions racing. Time trials begin at 6 pm. racing at 7:30 p.m. sharp. Racing continues every Saturday night through October 6th.
