Red Hot Mueller scores third feature win at LGR!
By Dale Erdmann

July 21, 2001; Lake Geneva, WI. It was another hot humid evening at Lake Geneva raceway Saturday night with three big sponsors on board, Jim Adams Auto Body/Carstar ,Rowe Heating and Air Conditioning and Radicom all from McHenry,Illinois. Rookie driver Jerry Mueller of West Bend in his Central Services Super late model number 49 won his third 35 lap feature of the season and took fast time earlier in the night. The popular low budget racer showed that he could win from the back and said “ I like the two tire rule, it helps guys like me and shows everyone the little guy can win”. Jack Rubach of Burlington the current McHenry Limo super stock point leader has had fast time all but opening night won his first official 25 lap feature of the season. Rubach won another feature this season when someone else was DQ’ed. Visiting McLeodUSA Mid American running Kevin Rybuck of Greenfield won the 26 lap Performance Unlimited sportsman feature.

Jack Rubach (#46) earned his second Super Stock feature victory of the season as he crossed the finish line first.  His previous win came when the first car to cross the line was disqualified.

The super late model feature got off to a rocky start, resulting in a complete restart. Jamie Artelt moved in front of the field with Rick Corso, Jeff Way, Jerry Cowan and Billy Baumeister next. Things were close as Corso worked on the leader for nine laps before getting past Artelt. It still looked like a parade lap on lap eleven with a spin by Bob Koidahl on lap twelve stopping the wicked pace. Four laps later Wayne Freimund, Terry Patnode, Koidahl and Matt Kocourek tangled in turn three halting the action again.

Just under way Denny Hiffman stalled with another caution. On this restart Corso had Baumeister challenging for the lead one lap later there was a new leader. On lap twenty Jerry Mueller was fourth with everyone close. Cowan spun and out came another caution with only three laps at full throttle.Mueller picked the right spot to be in with the next green Baumeister had pressure for his top spot as Way faded slightly as Mueller was on a mission. The next go round it was side by side up front as they diced for the top spot. Just as Mueller went in front May and point leader Billy Skinner Jr.joined the tussle at the top.

It was a three way battle for the lead but nothing fazed Mueller who went on to win the event even with a serious challenge near the wire with Skinner who was second, May was next, Baumeister, Fran Prestay and Wallace got together for another caution with the checkered. Way and Corso rounded out the top five.

Scott Eggebrecht and Mike Bell diced for that top spot as the super stock feature got under way. Five laps in and Bell inched ahead with Andy Szymanskyj challenging Eggebrecht. Doug Peterson Craig Mertes and Tom Fay were right on their back side and creating a great race.Szymanskyj slowed on lap thirteenfr some unknown reason, as Peterson and now Adam Regnier were right behind the top two. Fay went wide and headed to the pits on lap fourteen. One lap later semi winner John Maki Jr. retired to the pits while running mid pack.

Mertes got into the wall on lap eighteen just as Regnier got around Bell. Quickly Jack Rubach followed the new leader with just five laps to go. Rubach got around Regnier on lap twenty one, with John Janssen now third. It was a classic finish with Rubach just in front for the win. Regnier held back Dave Melahn who nipped Janssen at the wire, Peterson was next placing fifth in another great race.

The sportsman feature had Ken Joosten lead the first five laps before Terry Crowell took over. Jerry Freeman was next with Kevin rybuck and Zac Deeringer right behind the leaders. Rybuck pulled off a slick move on lap thirteen and there was a new leader. Four laps later Brian Baker and Joosten tangled with the only caution of the event. Rybuck went on to win this tight race with Freeman edging Deeringer, Mike Lange was fourth with Crowell completing the top five.

The second roll over contest of the season is this coming Saturday as the Sportsman join the Super Late Models and Super Stocks. Time trials are at 6 pm. racing at 7:30 p.m. sharp. As Avoco Oil sponsors the show.
