By Dale Erdmann |
July 14, 2001; Lake Geneva, WI. - Bumper to Bumper in Lake Geneva and Burlington along with Lakes Area Recreation
out of Delavan were on hand Saturday night at Lake Geneva Raceway for the weekly race
program as Randy Rodgers out of Lake Geneva won his first super late model feature for 35
laps in a brand new race car. John Maki Jr. of Antioch, Illinois won his first 25 lap
McHenry Limo super stock feature of the season and point leader Mike Lange of Milwaukee
won his first 25 lap Proformance Unlimited sportsman feature of the year.
Visiting Bob Fox and Fran Prestay dueled for the front spot one
lap before Presstay inched in front. Quickly Jerry Mueller got around Fox and set his
sights on the leader. On lap six Paul Loppnow had problems as Rick Corso andJeff Way
became involved and the first caution stopped the action.
As the next green flew Joe Fischer tried to get past third place
Fox but the veteran driver wasnt going to go down easy. Two laps later coming into
turn four Fox drifted high as Mueller brushed him going by just as he about to challenge
for the lead. Fox spun and out came the caution. As the field lined up Prestay knew
Mueller would pick the inside to mount his renewed challenge. Much to his dismay Mueller
was sent to the back because of his involvement in the racing incident.
On the restart Prestay now had Randy Rodgers all over him. Somehow Prestay crossed the
line in first but one lap later there was a new leader.Fischer Denny Hiffman and Landry
Potter were next. Fischer pitted one lap later for unknown reasons and Billy Baumeister
now joined the fray. It was still looking like a parade lap on lap twenty with Rodgers
still out front. It was a great race, but the movement was coming from Matt Kocourek and
Mueller as they came through the field. At the finish Rodgers came home the winner with
Prestay holding back the numerous challenges of Hiffman, Potter was right on his tail for
fourth, with Kocourek and Mueller next.
With only two laps in the super stock feature was derailed as Jack Clark barged his way
through a close field. Mike Kooi and Craig Mertes got the worse deal out of that incident
by just being there. Kooi smashed into the wall and two laps later Mertes mount started to
smoke and his night was over. Meanwhile John Maki Jr. was out front since the off set of
this event. Scott Scholl was putting a serious bid on the leader with Paul Konieczny
looking at that front spot too. Quickly Dan Huber only back for his second week after
major engine problems in June started to pressure Konieczny.
This was shaping up as another excellent race as Maki could feel the pressure for his
spot. Huber moved past Scholl as this tightened the field with ten laps to go. Adam
Regnier was now behind the top three coming into turn three/four he looked inside Huber
which could make a three deep situation. Backing out of it down the straightaway everyone
held their own. Konieczny slipped in front on lap seventeen, but this race wasnt
over. Huber moved in on Maki with Scholl and Regnier tied at the line.Huber got the black
flag on lap nineteen for allegedly creating the three deep situation.
There was still a tight race even with Huber gone with three laps to go Maki made another
bid for that top spot he held for seventeen laps. Coming out of turn four Maki drew even
with the leader. The race went close but Maki got in front at the wire and held on to win
the event. Konieczny held on for second with Regnier Rob Summers Jack Rubach and Scholl
rounding out the top six.
Ken Joosten shoot in front of the sportsman main event with Jocko Terrault Ken Smart and
Denny Norton Jr. all right there. Suddenly Shawn Utphall moved into third with Zac
Deeringer putting on the pressure. Somehow Mike Lange got a break and went from sixth to
third in five laps. It took two more laps before Lange would gain another position and
then it was a driver on a mission for the lead.
It was side by side with Joosten as Lange inched in front on lap thirteen going on to win
the feature. Deeringer and Joosten put on a race for second as the white flag came out the
runner up positions would change hands. Following this threesome Terrault Norton and
Utphall came across the line for another exciting contest. As the checkered came out
Utphall tagged Norton for some unknown reason spinning him after the line. No one was
injured and damage was slight.
This Saturday night Jim Adams Carstar Auto Body of McHenry, along with Radicom and Rowe
Heating and Air Conditioning sponsor the night . The twin bus jump has been cancelled due
to bus problems. One on ones replace this attraction. The sportsman join the super late
models and super stocks for the weekly program. Time trials begin at 6 pm. racing at 7:30
p.m. sharp.
