Point leader Corso wins Millennium Race!
By Dale Erdmann

July 13, 2001; Lake Geneva, WI. It was another great weather night for the weekly Friday Family fun night program at Lake Geneva Raceway. Rick Corso of McHenry, Illinois won the 15 lap millennium late model feature in a controversial event that had tempers flairing but not because of the win. Ken Johnson of Paddock Lake won his fourth straight Herb’s mini modified 15 lap feature, with calls for a bounty on the defending champion.

Curt Gnatzig of Menomonee Falls pulled off a late charge win in the 15 lap Perfection Auto Body legend cars feature. The Sideline Motorsports sport truck feature went to Wadsworth,IL. driver Vincent Merry the point leader.Todd Booker had a clean sweep in the Basic International car 20 lap feature and Dick Behrendt won the close super mini cup feature for 15 laps.

Photo Highlights

James Glessing drove in front of the field at the drop of the green in the millennium Late model feature, with Luke Westenberg next. The field tightened up just before the caution flew for first nighter Jim Olson’s spin in turn two. On the restart Glessing darted ahead of Denny Norton Jr. last weeks feature winner, as Westenberg slipped outside with visiting Randy Rodgers next.

Defending champion Russ Blakley and now Corso put the pressure on the leader. Blakley would stick his nose inside Glessing but the leader stayed in command of the top spot as he looked for his first feature win. With just five laps to go the black flag came out for Glessing but Blakley thought the flag was for his involvement in the three deep incident and headed for the pits. One lap later Glessing did the same and Corso took over the front spot and easily won the feature ahead of Norton, Westenberg, Olson and Rodgers.

Duck Wack who started third row outside flew in front of the mini modified feature before one lap was completed. Joe Miller, Roy Morrison and Hermie Schultz put a show on for second with a tight field behind them. After dicing for nine laps Schultz just slipped his way into second when Ken Johnson crept along side.

Before the lap was over it was a three deep battle for the lead. The crowd went wild as Wack and Schultz were in a dead heat in turn two with Johnson just afew inches behind. One lap later Johnson came in front with just four laps to go. At the wire Johnson was nearly five lengths ahead with Schultz second, Wack hung on for third, with Mike Van Houton putting on a successful late charge for fourth, Jim Morrison was fifth and Miller sixth.

It took Todd Booker nine laps to go from eighth row outside and into the lead even with five lapped cars could not stop the new point leader. Jeff Baum was second, with Willie Webb on his tail for third. Randy Schneider was fourth as Brad Sherer and Nick Estes rounded out the top six.

It took Dick Behrendt until the white flag lap to gain the top spot of the super mini cup feature with only one car out of competition.Rich Dawson was right behind the winner for second, with Brian Baldyga, Jeff Meyer, fast timer Tim Toussaint and Joe Soltis next in a tight race.

Next Friday night sport trucks and Rascal outlaws join the BIC cars, mini modifieds and legends. The millennium late models will open up the tire rule with pressure from other tracks and will also be here. Time trials begin at 6 pm. racing at 7:30 pm sharp. Moto cross takes place at 8 pm. on the stadium dirt course at another end of the grounds.
