Super Late Model feature win at the wire for Bishop!
By Dale Erdmann

April 21, 2001; Lake Geneva, WI. This has been said many times before and not to break tradition , I'll say it one more time. When the weather forcasters say, "rain likely" you might as well come to the races, because it will never rain. Saturday night , that's what happened, it was another perfect night for stock car racing at Lake Geneva Raceway.

Jerry Freeman topped the 25-lap Performance Unlimited sportsman main event, for his first win of the season.

The 2000 rookie of the year in the super late model division, Shane Bishop of Pell Lake won an exciting 35 lap feature race that came down to the line, giving race fans their second winner in two nights out. John Maki Jr. of Antioch,IL. ran second to another driver, but ended up winning the 25 lap feature race for the McHenry Limo super stocks, after a post race inspection dropped the apparent winner from the finish and Jerry Freeman of nearby Lyons won the Performance Unlimited sportsman 25 lap non stop feature.

Larry Los shot out front of the pack at the drop of the first green flag of the super late model feature, with a loose Rick Corson behind him. By lap three Corso had his problems worked out and was inside Los for the lead. Farther back in the field there was some four deep action as Garrett Fait tried to move up. Corso and Los diced for the lead the next few laps, with both drivers leading afew go rounds. By lap eight Joe Fischer joined the fight at the top, as Bob Koidahl came into play one lap later. This foursome had the crowd on the edge on their seats, then on lap twelve Shane Bishop joined the tussle at the top. With a race too close to call, Corso got just wide enough for Fischer to sneek inside on lap fifteen.

Los looked like he was on a rail, but Fischer tried everything in the book to get by, on lap nineteen they were side by side. Just behind the him Bishop was inside Corso, with Koidahl inside Jamie Wallace.

On lap twenty one Fischer inched in front. But Los wasn't going to settle for that move, staying to the outside of the new leader. Suddenly Fischer moved up into the high groove, but coming off turn four,it looked like the leader lost traction or power, causing contact to be made. Around went the leader and the first and only caution appeared on lap twenty three ,as the rest of the field moved by the fallen leader.

As the green reappeared Bishop stayed ahead of Corso, with Landry Potter now right there. Billy Baumeister who had waited for a break got one and crept up on the top three. Second through sxith, exchanged positions faster than they could be call. With six laps to go Bishop and Potter were glued together, as the pace was nearly unbearable. Potter first used the inside then the outside, but Bishop was running tough.

Coming off turn two with only a half lap to go, Bishop got out of his groove just slightly coming into three, with Potter just ahead. Drag racing to the line, Potter still held the advantage, but as they crossed the line Bishop scooted ahead, just when it counted, for the win. The crowd came to their feet for an ovation.

Mike Olson and Scott Eggebrecht worked on each other as the super stock feature began. Scott Scholl,Mike Bell and Dan Huber were next. On lap six fast time qualifier Jack Rubach and Adam Regnier got locked together with the first of two cautions appearing. Regnier received more damage than could be repaired by the next green,as Bell slipped in front. Right on his tail was John Maki Jr. as Olson drifted back to third. It still looked like a parade lap, with Dave Edwards and Eggebrecht bouncing off each other in one of those not give an inch contests. By lap ten Maki had Doug Peterson looking for a hole,as Bell stayed just in front. Edwards got the black flag on lap eleven for more contact than starter Dave Rex could endure, sending the sixth place runner to the pits for the finally fourteen laps.

On lap fifteen Rubach spun, collecting Greg Peterson for the final caution of the event. On the restart Bell regained the lead, but Maki was putting on the pressure Doug Peterson dropped out with problems. First Maki tried the inside but Bell didn't let the challenger by. Maki made a daring move and it paid off. Coming off turn two Maki went to the outside and down into three Maki was the new leader. Moving out to a two car advantage, Maki looked like he'd pull off a win, until fast timer Dave Melahn moved past Bell and then onto the new leader. On lap twenty Melahn was in front after a lengthy battle for that top spot. At the wire five laps later Melahn was still in front for his second win of the young season. Maki took second, with Bell just in front of the new point leader Greg Mertes. Mike Kooi was fifth, with Andy Szymanskyj, Scholl and Mike Olson rounding out the top eight.

At a post race inspection Melahn was DQ'ed for too much compression. Maki was awarded the win with Pete Olson moving up to eighth.

Rookie Bob Selsing moved in front of the sportsman feature, with Dan Erikson, Jerry Freeman and Kenn Joosten in hot pursuit. Mike Lange who came into tonights show in a three way tie for the point lead was moving up, as Freeman secured second on lap three. Like features before ithem, this was another race that resembled a parade lap. Erikson slipped in front on lap four, with right there. By lap ten Freeman was along side the leader and toppling the front runner one lap later.

Lange got around Erikson two laps later, with the first car lapped with just five laps to go.Those final laps were close but Freeman was in command of that top spot, with Lange second, quick timer Kevin Rybuck who took over the point lead with his complete night was third. Erikson held onto fourth ,as Terry Crowell was along side for fifth. Last weeks feature winner Nick Schumacher was next, as John Janssen and Zac Deeringer rounded out the top eight.

This coming Saturday night is the first special of the season as the McLeod USA Mid American series comes to the one third mile paved banked oval, joining the super late models and the super stocks. Time trials are at 6 pm. racing at 7:30 sharp. The raceway phone is 262-248-8566. The 24 hour website is at www.lakegenevaraceway.com
