By Dale Erdmann |
June 30, 2001; Lake Geneva, WI. - After finishing in the runner-up spot in the 2000 version
of the Al Schill, Jr Memorial 150, RE/MAX Challenge Series, NASCAR Touring event, Steve
Carlson redeemed himself Saturday night, claiming top honors in the event.
"This is just such a thrill winning
this event because Little Al was a great kid and was going to be a star in this
sport," said Carlson.

feature Saturday at LGR. |
For the third straight year, the
event was run in honor of Al Schill, Jr who passed away, at his home, in March of 1999
after competing in that seasons' opening event.
Carlson took the lead from Brian Hoppe with an inside move
on lap 97 as the pair raced off of turn two. Hoppe had led from the drop of the green.
"They said on the radio that Steve was coming and
that I needed to get going," said Hoppe. "When I did that I used up the brakes
too much."
Carlson crossed the line by 1.018 seconds ahead of Hoppe
with Justin Diercks, Al Schill, Sr and Bud Pole Fast Qualifier, Jon Lemke, rounding out
the top five. The third place finish was Dierck's best finish of the season.
"We finally got some luck," said Diercks.
"It was really tough out there, especially when you've got Al Schill behind you
because he's got more laps here than anyone."
Schill, Sr, the defending race champion, made a charge
from his 11th place starting spot, but could get no further up than fourth.
"At the last minute, we loosened the car up because
the weather looked like it was going cool off, and that backfired on us," said
Schill. "We still had a lot of fun and Little Al was riding with me."
Schill was making his first start of the 2001 RE/MAX
Challenge Series season. The series next heads to Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin
for just the second road course event in the 27-year history of the series.
