Potter
takes victory in front of largest crowd ever!
By Dale Erdmann |
June 16, 2001; Lake Geneva, WI. - Just one
week ago the largest crowd to attend a weekly race program at Lake Geneva Raceway on a
Saturday night was established . Well this week even more race fans came out to enjoy a
real great race program sponsored by Stinebrinks Pick and Save. Landry Potter
of Delavan won his third super late model 35 lap feature. Jack Rubach of Burlington
didnt come across the line first in the 25 lap McHenry Limo super stock feature that
went non stop, but finishing second in a legal race car gave the win to a second year
driver who has taken fast time all but opening night. Shawn Upthall of Racine, another
second year driver won his first career feature in the Performance Unlimited Sportsman 20
lap feature.
Visiting former sport truck champion Ed Dunne was in the seat
of Jamie Wallaces race car darting off the pole and into lead with Scott Portiz
right behind him. Wayne Freimund was next with Billy Skinner Jr and Jerry Cowan fighting
for fifth. Lap three Rick Corso and Jerry Mueller made contact with everyone getting jumpy
but no caution with both continuing. By lap five Dunne established a three car advantage
with second through tenth tight.
Fast timer Matt Kocourek spun after contact with Billy Baumeister bringing out the first
slowdown flag. At the drop of the next green Dunne had Freimund all over him , but with
Poritz, Skinner and now Brad Durbin right there a mistake would be dangerous. Freimund
lost second on lap eleven as Poritz would got by. Four laps later Durbin would get past
Freimund and then three laps more in the books point leader Skinner would get under the
former challenger.
Cowan who was securely in fifth knew Rick Corso and Landry Potter would be coming up to
challenge before long. Mark Simonsen spun in mid pack with everyone missing him on lap
twenty five with next stoppage. One lap later Mueller tagged Freimund and out came another
caution. Each restart Dunne was up to for the call as the veteran driver walked the field.
On lap twenty seven it a side by side battle for the top spot as Skinner moved under the
leader. Within two laps the leader faultered going to deep into turn two, then three but
still maintaining the lead.
The crowd was on their feet with now five drivers dicing for the lead Dunne Skinner Potter
Durbin and now Corso joined the fray. Just as the white flag was displayed Dunne for the
first time in two laps looked like hed pulled off this win. Potter inched ahead of
Skinner as the field went under the wire for
that lap.It was a carbon copy final lap. But coming off turn two Dunne spun all by himself
and the caution quickly came out. The checkered join the other flag and this race was
over. Potter got the win with Skinner, Durbin, Corso, Joe Fischer and Kocourek for a close
finish.
Scott Eggebrecht used his pole position to help him gain the lead of the super stock
feature. Pete Olson moved along side one lap later , with Paul Konieczny trying to get
under the leader. Looking like the start of this event, the side by side cars would not
leave room for any movement. Scott Scholl and Mike Kooi were knocking on Koniecznys
door by lap four. Now new comer AJ Dunne, Doug Peterson and Craig Mertes moved in for an
even tighter race.
Eggebrecht was clearly in front of the field but what a race for the next twelve spots.
Kooi gained another position and was now up to second on lap fifteen. Two laps later there
was a new leader. With just six laps to go, this would be a barn burner dicing for that
top spot, Kooi, had Rubach and Dave Melahn looking for that front spot. Melahn grabbed the
lead on lap twenty, with Kooi trying everything legal to hold onto second. With the white
flag out Melahn wasnt going to let Rubach caught him coming across the line first.
Rubach, Kooi, Peterson, Eggebrecht and Rob Summers completed the top six. A post
race inspection dropped Melahn from the finish after it was discovered that the crankshaft
was a light weight unit. This gave Rubach his first win of the season, with Mertes moving
up to sixth.
Shawn Upthall led all twenty laps of the sportsman main, the first
caution came on lap seven when Joshua Shaw and Jerry Freeman got together. Freemans
mount received the most damage, but no one was injured. Upthall held back numerous
challenges from Zac Deeringer and Brian Baker for this first win.
Next Saturday night will be the Mid American McLeod USA point series event along with the
super late models and the super stocks. Lynch Motors of Burlington will be sponsoring the
program. During the day over at the dealership in Burlington on Highway 36 north, there
will be a car show with all types of race cars. The Dale Earnhardt Jr. number 8 Budweiser
race car will be there on display. This show will be from 10 am until 4 pm. before the
raceway program.
