Potter wins "NO BULL" Challenge!
By Dale Erdmann

June 9, 2001; Lake Geneva, WI. After two weeks of bad weather it was a perfect night for weekly Saturday Night racing at Lake Geneva Raceway. The program was the first of a series the No Bull Triple Crown Sponsored by Five Star Stock bodies and the weekly sponsor Kunes Country Ford from Delavan. For the first time since the new track opened in 1990, the largest crowd to witness a race show and record car count in the pit area, the eighth night of racing was excellent. Defnding track champion Landry Potter out of Delavan won the 50 lap super late model feature, collecting $1000 for his efforts. Mike Bell from Waukesha a second year driver in the McHenry Limo super stocks won his first career 22 lap feature cut short due to the hole in the wall caused by a roll over. Brian Baker from nearby Springfield won
his first feature of the season in the 25 lap Performance Unlimited sportsman cars.

Paul Roscoe (#88) flipped his car Saturday night at LGR during the running of the Street Stock feature. He was not injured.

Brad Durbin moved in front of the super late model field after a false start sent Randy Rodgers and Brian Ulrich to the pits. Rodgers returned on lap two, with Ulrich back on lap twenty two. Shane Bishop, Jerry Cowan and Joe Fischer were right behind him. Billy Baumeister was the only mover, advancing to third on lap ten. Former champion Conrad Morgan scooted into fifth on lap eleven with Fischer now up to third. Three laps later Fischer headed towards the pits with unknown problems as Morgan slipped into fourth.

The first caution came on lap thirty when point leader Billy Skinner Jr. and Jamie Wallace got together after a lengthy battle in those earlier laps. On the restart Durbin marched right back in front but Bishop was determined to take the lead. Three more laps went into the books and Bishop hopped in front. Now Durbin had Landry Potter at his side. Right behind these tight race cars, Morgan was working on Baumeister who he had passed before the last caution. On that restart Morgan picked the wrong lane and he had to pass Baumeister again. On lap thirty six Morgan had just got past Baumeister when contact was made, with something rarely seen by the former champion Morgan a spin.

Both drivers were regaled to the rear and the race restarted with Bishop feeling the pressure of Potter. Baumeister headed to the pits on lap thirty nine and two laps later the caution appeared for another incident. Morgan and Bishop retired to the pits for some unknown reason and Potter was the new leader. The final caution was a solo spin by Mark Hartline. The seven lap dash was tight, with last weeks feature winner Kent Burkoth right on the heels of the new leader. The last lap brought the crowd to their feet as Randy Rodgers who was down a lap right there with Burkoth trying everything to get by. Coming across the wire Potter was the winner, with Burkoth at his left side and Skinner at his right. Al Schill was next with Durbin,Wayne Freimund ,a recovered Wallace and Larry Los eighth.

Dan Huber came off the pole running out front of the super stock feature with Mike Bell, Rob Summers, Mike Olson and Dave Edwards next. For the next ten laps Huber and Bell drove a flawless race to the delight of the large crowd. John Maki Jr. moved around Edwards on lap ten with Mike Kooi and Andy Szymanskyj next. It still looked like a parade lap with ten more laps to go as Bell crept in front. Huber dropped out on lap eightteen.

It would be a non stop race until lap twenty two when second year driver Paul Roscoe got acrossed up coming out of two and got out of square rolling on his roof with after knocking down a portion of the wall and pitching the protective tire into the fence . Roscoe wasn’t injured but his race car received heavy damage. Bell won the race that ended three laps early due to the incident. Summers hung on for third, with Dave Melahn, Doug Peterson, Maki , Greg Peterson and Craig Mertes in another close contest.

Brian Baker used his starting position to his advantage, climbing on top of the field as the first lap was recorded. Ken Smart and Terry Crowell diced for second two laps before Crowell secured the spot for awhile. Shawn Upthall was just waiting for any slip ups taking over third on lap three. Dan Erickson did a solo spin on lap eight stopping the wicked pace. Underway again Upthall grabbed second, with Jocko Terrault next.

Baker could not be denied even with a costly incident on lap eighteen between Crowell and Jerry Freeman causing extreme damage to both mounts. Baker held back challenges from Upthall, then Terrault and fast timer Zac Deeringer before winning his first feature of the season. Deeringer was second with point leader Mike Lange nipping Upthall at the wire.

This coming Saturday night Stinebrink’s Pick and Save Food Stores will sponsor the show with the annual grocery cart races and the rescheduled trailer race. The sportsman join the super late models and super stocks for the weekly action. Time trials begin at 6 pm. Racing at 7:30 pm sharp.
