Burkoth best in Super Late action
at Lake Geneva Raceway!

By Dale Erdmann

June 2, 2001; Lake Geneva, WI. For the past thirteen days weather in Southeastern  Wisconsin has been fall like to say the least and after last weeks rain out, the Al's Auto Salvage and Trailer sales night was going to be run no matter what the weather would do. Time trials were rained out, but race fans keep buying tickets during that rain, so the show went on.

Mike Vogt Jr. (#9) captured the Super Late Model semi-feature event.

Time trials were cancelled and everyone was lined up by average points. The first green of the super late model feature saw Denny Hiffman charge into the lead, with Bob Koidahl right behind him. Brad Durbin, Jerry Cowan and Shane Bishop were next. On lap three Larry Los and Wayne Freimund  made contact in turn two with everyone scattering .

The caution never appeared but Freimund's great run was over, heading for the pit area for two laps with unknown damage. Two laps later Los got out of square again and some quick driving on Landry Potter's part stopped theincident from getting ugly. Koidahl mean while was mounting a serious of the leader. Durbin now had Bishop on his tail by lap ten as a very wicked pace continued. It took Bishop two laps to get under Durbin with Hiffman in firm command of the top spot. Joe Fischer was the next to drop Durbin another position after another two lap battle. Kent Burkoth who had heat race problems seemed to have his mount in correct form knocking on Durbin's door next.

There was quite the mix as everyone diced for a new position on lap sixteen, when the dust cleared Burkoth and Potter both got around Durbin that go round, as the race at the front was tight. On lap nineteen the first caution appeared for a Jerry Mueller spin after he and Durbin made contact. After the caution was already out , Rick Corso, point leader Billy Skinner Jr. and Brian Ulrich headed for the pits, all returning before the green was thrown.

A light mist started to fall on lap twenty  with Hiffman never faltering with Koidahl at his side and Bishop waiting for any mistake up front. Changes came one lap later as something happened to Koidahl's mount,as the challenger headed to the pits just after Bishop scooted into second. Seemed like the pressure never bothered Hiffman who was looking for his first win since 1997. But then came lap twenty eight ,as contact was made between the top two. The leader spun around as Bishop nearly did the same thing. This brought the race to it's last halt.

Burkoth became the leader after that incident but Potter wasn't going to let the win come easy. Fischer joined  the fight up front. The last five laps were just perfect as this twosome diced for the lead. Potter iched in front with just three laps to go, but Burkoth climbed back in front before the lap was to turn one. Skinner got past Fischer with two laps to go but Burkoth wasn't giving in. Coming across the line it was Burkoth's race as he scored the win, Potter was next with Skinner right there too, Fischer held on to fourth Billy Baumeister was fifth followed by Corso Cowan and Jeff Way.

The sportsman feature was just nine laps old, when heavy drizzle started to fall bringing the race to a halt. Because it was raining hard after just afew minutes everyone was sent to the pits until the storm blew over. This never happened so with a cold West wind, the show with drizzle still falling was called a complete  program. The super stock feature was also called due to the rain. Again the trailer race was cancelled and rescheduled  for June 16. along with the shopping cart race.

This coming Saturday night Five Star Stock Car bodies presents the first ever No Bull special with drivers from all over coming in for the $1000  to win. Kunes Country Ford in Delavan is the weekly sponsor. Time trials begin at 6 pm. racing at 7:30 sharp. The sportsman cars will join the super late models and super stocks for this program.
