Point
leader Durbin becomes first double winner
Paul Loppnow shot out front of the eighteen car starting field of the super late model feature, with rookie Jamie Artelt, Denny Hiffman, Billy Skinner Jr. Chicagoland star Dave Weltmeyer and Joe Fisher all over the leader, with just four laps in. Al Schill and Chuck Johnson got together in turn one, halting the intense pace. Loppnow charged back in front, at the next green, with Skinner second and Artelt third. Four laps later the race stopped for a Landry Potter and Russ Blakley tangle. Each time Loppnow drove into the lead, but this time Weltmeyer was inside the leader. Quickly Kent Burkoth moved into third, with Brad Durbin up to fourth by lap twelve. It was quite the battle for that top spot the next five laps, before Weltmeyer inched ahead on lap fourteen. Artelt went very wide the next lap, then headed for the pits with some type of problem.. Loppnow wasn't going to let the new leader, Weltmeyer, off easy, charging back in front, as this twosome diced for that top spot.
Weltmeyer couldn't get hold of the track, slipping back to third, as Durbin now starting challenging the leader. Then Jamie Wallace who had early, turned quick time, moved into third on lap eighteen, Wallace and Durbin went back and forth for second, as Loppnow drove a superb race since the lap one. With just five laps to go, Schill who had started dead last because of that lap four incident, was under Wallace. It looked like that would be the end of everyone's quest forward, but on lap twenty eight, Durbin tried it one more time. This time succeeding, in gaining the lead from Loppnow as Wallace followed the new leader to claim the runner-up spot.. Time ran out, as Durbin picked up the win. Wallace was second with Loppnow, Schill, Weltmeyer, Shane Bishop, Potter and Fisher completing the top eight.
Twenty race cars took the green flag in the super stock feature, that off to a rocky start. Afew drivers brake checked the field and rookie Jeremy Olson and last weeks feature winner, Jerry Cowan never saw lap two, of what would be a non stop main event. Rick Jacobs led lap one, before Scott Scholl crept in front. It was so tight in the field, as Jim Hughes slipped into third, with Tom Fay, John Maki and Dan Huber next. By lap five, second place Hughes could feel the pressure of Maki and Huber, as Scholl remained the leader. It took another four laps before Maki could secure second, after an intense battle for that spot. But to take the lead from Scholl was another story. Side by side the top two worked for the lead. Four more laps later, Maki inched ahead. Huber who until one year ago was crew chief for Maki, wasted little time on Scholl. But to catch the leader was another story. Along came lap twenty, as the first car was lapped. It was a show of shows, as the Antioch twosome of Maki and Huber diced for the lead. Maki held the advantage until the white flag lap, as Huber moved in front. But coming for the checkered Maki nipped Huber at the wire, with fast timer John Janssen inside, with an excellent three deep finish. Jeremy Tess was outside for fourth, with point leader Adam Regnier, Hughes, Mike Kooi and Jeff Lorenz next. A post inspection dropped Huber from the finish, after that great run and Scholl rounded out the top eight.
It was a tough Legacy feature, with the fifteen laps taking nearly thirty minutes to run. Doug Reichley held the lead for two laps before the 1999 champion Gary Kreuger took over that top spot. But with five laps to go, there was contact with fast timer Landry Potter and the following caution put third place Ken Wills in front, taking the win five laps later. Keith Toll, Reichley who also won the heat was third, Erik Darnell who won the dash was fourth. A recovering Potter and Kreuger were next.
It was a good race between Jim Olson, Eric Roberts, Chad Ross and Todd Ross during the Sport Truck feature event. Todd Ross nipped Jim Olson for the win, as Chad Ross, Eric Roberts and RJ Ross rounded out the top five.
