Schill, Janssen and Corso star in LGR feature wins!
By Dale Erdmann

April 29, 2000; Lake Geneva, WI. It was a Mid American points series program at Lake Geneva Raceway, Saturday night. With nearly 100 race cars in the three divisions that were here, race fans wondered if the heat races would ever end. At 9:51 pm. the first feature finally rolled to the line and at 10:22pm, John Janssen of Genoa City, broke Adam Regnier's win streak, by winning the 20 lap super stock feature.

Defending Super Late Model champ Al Schill Sr. (#14) scored his first feature win this season.

The next feature for 30 laps, was the super late models, as Al Schill of Franklin, the defending track champion, won his first feature of the season, giving race fans a great show and now three different winners, for the young season. Rick Corso of McHenry, Illinois won the curfew shortened 34 lap Mid American feature, as the defending champion and current point leader, kept his record intact, with his second win in two outings.

Terry Patnode flew into the lead, as the 17 cars behind him scrambled for more surface to race on as the super late model feature began. Second place Matt Mylin chose to challenge the leader by going far inside, as Patnode rode what could be called the "racing edge". By lap four, Mylin was just ahead at the stripe. Third week driver Jamie Artelt and Patnode tussled for second for the next three laps before the exchange of second position. Within one more lap, Al Schill was inside Patnode for third. Then something happened on lap 8, as rookie Bob Koidahl spun, collecting Brad Durbin, fast timer Denny Hiffman and Russ Blakley.

No one was injured but there was some damaged sheet metal. Mylin held onto to the lead only one lap, before Schill sailed into the lead. Quickly, Landry Potter followed the new leader, but Mylin wasn't going to give up easily. On lap 13, Brian Urlich drilled Patnode and over half the field became involved in that incident and another caution ensued. The accident ended the evening of Fran Prestay and Patnode, but no one was injured . There was one more lap of action, before Koidahl spun again, halting the action for the very last time.

On the final restart Schill nearly lost the lead to Potter numerous times, going into turn one. As this twosome ran hard, the first car to be lapped came on lap 20, Schill used that car to his advantage, with a slim margin between his challenger, with just eight laps to go, Mylin and Artelt, got their second wind, as a recovering Hiffman was close behind. The final five laps brought the crowd to their feet as Schill took the narrow victory, with Potter at his left and Mylin his right. Artelt, Hiffman, Blakley, Bill Kloster and Paul Loppnow completed the top eight.

Good looking and fast! John Janssen (#43) put his sharp looking Super Stock in the winners circle after taking a heat race.

Rookie Mike Bell paced the field of the super stock twenty car field, with Bert Getchell and Brian Pluess battling for second. Just like that Dan Huber scooted into second, as the field diced for positions. Jeremy Tess in his second night out worked on Getchell for two laps before taking over third. Huber darted into the lead on lap four, with Tess, Bell and now Jerry Cowan all over each other.

Huber didn't have time to breath as Tess was outside the leader starting one lap later. For the first time ever, mid pack frustrations showed up, as there was some four deep racing to no avail for advancement, with this competitive field. The first of two cautions were seen on lap 11, with an incident between Marty Robb, Jim Hughs and Mike Kooi. Then Tom Fay running ninth, blew something and cars spun to avoid each other. John Maki was in the wrong place at the wrong time and ended up in back of the field before that situation was over.

Huber and Tess diced for that top spot until John Janssen climbed on top on lap fourteen. Janssen maintained just enough space to win the event, with Huber second, Adam Regnier was third, Tess, Cowan, Jeff Lorenz and the Peterson brothers Doug and Greg rounding out a close top eight.

Next Saturday night, four divisions of action will be here. The Wisconsin Allison Legacy cars and the sport trucks join the super late models and super stocks. Time trials are at 6 pm. racing at 7:30pm sharp.
