Potter takes Super Late Model title!
Lorenz crowned Super Stock king!

By Dale Erdmann

September 23, 2000; Lake Geneva, WI. - Landry Potter of Delavan was crowned the 2000 super late model champion, a season that was dedicated to his friend Jim Kjellander who was killed in an automobile accident on March 6th. It all started off with the winning of the BARS "Lets go racing" Motorsports show, when Potter unveiled his race car he would campaign here, with the number 55 on it in memory of Kjellander. During his career, Potter's number had always been 22 and that was the number on his car when he was the 1991 street stock champion.

Landry Potter (#22) earned the 2000 Lake Geneva Raceway Late Model title.  Potter dedicated the championship to fellow racer Jim Kjellander who passed away in a traffic accident in spring.

This evening's program was sponsored by Lakes Area Recreation along with Arctic Cat Snowmobiles and ATV's. Jeff Lorenz of Waukesha won the super stock championship, his first for the third year driver. Both championships came down to the last events, drivers will still receive 150 show up points for the final two weeks. The super late model feature went to Eddie May of Crystal Lake, Illinois, who was the 1984 champion, in the old late model division that ran here, it was his first win since August of 1995. After his below average performance at Illiana last weekend, May said,"We thought about just putting the car in the garage and take it apart, sure glad we didn't do that. We are all worked up about next weekend now" .

In the Super Late Model main, Mike Vogt Jr. and Bob Kiodahl raced side by side for three laps of dead heat action, before Kiodahl got the upper hand. With a tight field, someone brake checked and Landry Potter went around, halting the race for the first time on lap six. On the restart Joe Fischer grabbed the lead from Kiodahl, with Denny Hiffman in hot pursuit. On lap nine Kiodahl regained that top spot, but after some close racing Fischer inched ahead one more time.

Lap eleven Hiffman and Kiodahl were too close to call for that second spot. Billy Baumeister's solo spin on lap seventeen stopped a great race. On the next green, Fischer had Hiffman at his inside, the leader came right back in front for the next four laps, before the lead changed hands. Just like that quick timer Shane Bishop was up to the out side of Fischer, then passing him, one lap later. Quickly Garrett Fait shot around Fischer, with Kent Burkoth next in line.

Eddie May (#2) made his way back to Lake Geneva Raceway's victory lane for the first time since August of 1995.  It was his first career Super Late Model feature win.

A quick yellow flew on lap twenty seven, halting the intense action. Just before that stop, Fait and Bishop were locked in a heated battle for second. On the restart Potter slipped into second, with Hiffman in firm command of that top spot. Lap thirty Bob Koidahl spun, with everyone missed him but Hiffman's lead was again gone. On the next go round, Potter and and Bishop were glued together for second, as Hiffman marched away from the field. Fischer spun with just thirteen laps to go and this started a long delay with numerous caution laps, including a Fait and Jamie Wallace get together.

Each time Hiffman looked like he'd pull off a victory. Then with the green flag shown, Burkoth tried the inside of the leader on the restart, contact was made and Hiffman's win would not be. After each caution, May would lose one of his competitors. With a green white checkered situation, May held back many challenges from Bishop, Wallace and Potter. At the line May became the sixteenth different winner for the season, with Bishop, Wallace, Potter, a recovered Hiffman and Fischer for a tight group at the finish in the top spots.

Jerry Cowan (#67) earned his fourth Super Stock feature win of the season.  The victory elevated Cowan to second place in the final 2000 standings.

Two rookies dueled for that top spot in the super stock main event, Scott Scholl got the upper hand on Rob Summers while Scott Peterson ran third. Suddenly Pete Olson and last weeks feature winner Andy Szymanskyj were all over the top two. It looked like Jerry Cowan was having problems, as he got together with Jeff Lorenz, stopping the action for the first time on lap five. Summers headed for the pits, with unknown problems. Scholl regained that top spot on the next green.

Behind Scholl, were Darryl Traber, Pete Olson and Szymanskyj all wanting second place. John Janssen and John Maki Jr. tangled on lap nine along with Doug Peterson getting some damage after being collected in the incident. Janssen headed to the pits and with the help of his fellow competitors crew, the Jeff Lorenz group, he was back on the track before the next green. This race would come down to either Jerry Cowan, John Janssen or Lorenz winning the championship, after Adam Regnier had problems all night.

Szymanskyj pulled off a slick move on the restart and was the new leader. Traber got under Olson and was a solid second, with Scholl trying to recover from that lap of changes. Olson rebounded two laps later, then dialed in on the leader. From out of nowhere, Cowan was back up to fifth, then one lap later me was fourth behind Traber. By lap fourteen, Cowan had passed Traber, then Olson and was knocking on the door of the leader. On lap seventeen the lead would change as Cowan now controlled the top spot.

With just ten laps to go, the field was tight up front and only so much room for advancement. While running mid pack, Janssen spun, causing a slowdown to ensue. Then on lap twenty four Paul Konieczny, Doug Peterson and Mike Kooi tangled stopping the event for the final time. At the same time Maki and Olson made contact and everyone had to start in back.  All the drivers involved had to start in the back. The five lap dash that remained saw Cowan holding back the numerous challenges from Lorenz , Jack Rubach and Traber.

The last lap was awesome, with Cowan winning his fourth feature, Lorenz settled for second, with Rubach third, Peterson nipped Traber for fourth, while Janssen recovered with a sixth place run. With his win Cowan nipped Janssen for second place in the standings by five points.

The sport truck feature was called after the green flag was thrown. Everyone except one truck got involved in an incident that followed the drop of the green. Bill Olson went into the wall backwards, jarring the grandstand with the hard hit. Olson was shook up and released after being examined by EMT's at the scene. Chad Phillips wasn't as lucky, after his racing incident, the runner up in points was examined by on Sunday morning and was shown to have torn ligaments in his left arm and will not be able to race the rest of the season. Rolf Tillman will race the Phillips truck that sent Tillman to third track titles.

No one else was injured and the race was called.
