Bishop bests field for first career
Lake Geneva Raceway Super Late Model feature win!

By Dale Erdmann

July 29, 2000; Lake Geneva, WI. With ideal weather upon us, the Saturday night race program sponsored by Lynch Motors and Avoco Oil Company at Lake Geneva Raceway, saw the best crowd of the season. Shane Bishop of Pell Lake, a rookie driver in the super late model division, won his first career 30 lap feature. Jerry Cowan of Burlington, who tonight raced in the super stocks and super late models, won his third 25 lap feature of the year and Jesse Wilcox won the 35 lap McLeod USA Mid American feature race.

Rookie Jamie Artelt and Billy Baumeister rubbed each other the wrong way from their front row starting positions, but didn't get anyone involved with that ruckus,a t the off set of the super late model feature. Artelt out motored the field on lap two, to gain some extra pavement on the competition. Brad Durbin who hasn't had any luck the last few weeks spun onto the infield on lap three, bringing the race to a halt after something caused that incident.

As racing resumed Artelt couldn't walk on the field, as it became a three way battle for that top spot. Baumeister was inside, Artelt and Landry Potter outside, before a clear leader immerged, one lap later.

With Artelt back in front, Potter used the inside groove to work on Baumeister, as Shane Bishop and Kent Burkoth working in behind the top three. Potter wasted little time, scooting from third to along side the leader, all within a lap. Lap eight was a dead heat, before Potter moved in front, on the next lap. The next six laps had the new leader, Potter, extend his position dramatically, but from second back, it was side by side excitement, as Bishop, Artelt, fast qualifier Jeff Storm, Burkoth, Baumeister, Jamie Wallace and Joe Fischer could have taken the crowds, breath away. By lap twenty, Potter looked like a sure bet for the win.

But just like that, the caution flew for a Bob Koidahl spin and Potter's lead was gone. As the green reappeared, Potter had Bishop all over him, as the cluster behind them mixed it up. Somehow Bob Moeller got his hood pushed up and another quick caution ensued. The seven lap dash, saw Potter try the inside and then the outside, but Bishop wanted this win. With just four laps to go, another slowdown don't faze Bishop who took the win three laps later, with Potter along side. Burkoth was on the outside groove in third at the finish with Storm, Wallace and Denny Hiffman completing the top six, in this thrill packed contest.

The super stock feature got off to a poor start, as pole sitter John Maki Jr. lost power, everyone scattered, but cars went wildly everywhere. John Janssen reeieved the most damage and hurried tothe pits for major repairs. Al Kuphal darted out front on the restart, with Greg Janutka, Mike Kooi and Andy Szymanskyj next.

Maki made it through turn two and came to rest on the infield. Two laps later Kooi was right on the inside of the leader, just as the lead changed semi winner Jeremy Olson got turned around, collecting Jack Rubach. Olson's mount got the most damage, but everyone escaped injury. The restart san Kooi move back in front, with Dan Huber in his first appearance since late June now fourth. Things got real ugly on lap nine, Kuphal was on the outside, Huber grabbed the inside and Kooi was just in front, as contact was made, Kuphal got squeezed into the wall.

Kuphal's mount received heavy damage, but after being towed to the pits, the race went on. Kooi now had Jerry Cowan, Adam Regnier and Jeff Lorenz who had fast time tonight, in a field of thirty one cars timed in, all challenging for the lead. It was tight, as Greg Peterson, Szymanskyj and Rick Jacobs joined the cluster. Janutka worked on Jacobs, after being pushed aside on the restart. Craig Mertes now moved in to challenge this group on lap ten.

Entering lap eleven, Cowan took the chance and slipped in front, with everyone trying to find that some hole. Lorenz came through next, with Kooi, losing pavement and Regnier along side. The top three moved away from the field with just five laps to go. Suddenly Mertes slowed with everyone missing the him, as the disabled mount, coasted to the infield, with no caution appearing. It was a good finish, with Cowan ahead at the stripe, Lorenz held onto second with Regnier third, Peterson put on a late charge, finishing fourth, as Kooi and Jacobs rounding out the top six.

Next Saturday night, Imagetec L.P. will be sponsoring four divisions, with the Wisconsin Allison Legacy series and the Sportsman will join the super late models and super stocks. Time trials begin at 6 pm. racing at 7:30 p.m. sharp. On Sunday morning at 11 a.m. the GEM Pro karts, along with the River Valley Cart Club, take to the third mile oval and a special course set up for the race program.
