Burkoth
scores first SLM victory of season at Lake Geneva!
In an emotional victory James Olson of Woodstock, Illinois won the 15 lap sport truck feature. Olson received a standing ovation from the crowd and he thanked everyone for their great support during is trying time. It was four weeks ago, to the day that Olson lost his son, Jimmy Olson Jr. during a last lap accident here, on the opening weekly Friday night program. Adam Regnier of McHenry, IL. won his fourth 25 lap super stock feature of the season and defending Wisconsin Allison legacy series champion, Gary Kreuger of Edgerton led wire to wire for the win, in the 20 lap event. The program was sponsored by Herb's used cycle parts of Antioch, IL.
Rookie Matt Kocourek jumped in front of the starting field, with seventeen other super late model drivers right behind him. Just three laps were completed before the caution appeared, as some bad three deep racing caused problems. Puzzling, only two of the three drivers were sent to the back, with Bob Koidahl won the leader. When the next green came out, Koidahl, Joe Fischer and Eddie May dueled for that front spot. Koidahl led the next three laps, as the field remained tight. Fischer edged in front on lap seven, with Koidahl outside. May was right behind him and Burkoth inside. One slip and the field would have no where to go, but hard racing continued. Fischer started to move away from the field, as Burkoth slipped into second. For the next five laps, Burkoth had to make up some pavement on the leader. By lap fifteen, it was a side by side battle for the lead, one lap later both drivers drifted wide, with Al Schill and May now on their bumpers. Within a lap, Landry Potter got around Koidahl and it was a five car show up front. Fischer's dream of a win stopped on lap twenty-one, as his brakes started to fade, due to after lap after lap of close racing. Burkoth inched ahead, before the next another caution, when Potter and Brad Durbin got together on lap twenty six.
Back to green racing ensued for just two lap, before the final caution came, just as the white flag was displayed, as a mid pack mess stopped the action. With a green/white/checkered situation, Burkoth would non have, alot of cars to contend with. It was a dash to remember, with Burkoth sailing across the line first, as Schill nipped May for second, Jamie Wallace then nipped Fischer for fourth, with Denny Hiffman, Bob Moeller and a recovered Durbin under the wire .
The super stock feature brought an rookie to the front, as Scott Scholl paced the twenty car field, with Greg Peterson, Dave Lohse and Andy Szymanskyj next. Peterson grabbed the lead on lap six, with Scholl and Szymanskyj putting on a show for second. Doug Peterson wanted to move up, as Lohse could feel the pressure by lap ten. Another rookie Mike Bell was now on Scholl's tail, taking over third after a lengthy fight, on lap ten. Doug Peterson wasn't going to settle for anything, but challenging his brother for that lead as he took over third on lap sixteen. It was still looking like a parade lap, plus the physical abuse on the track was getting to starter Dave Rex Jr.as the warnings were numerous. John Maki Jr. and Jerry Cowan running mid pack made contact, but the race continued. The black was displayed one lap later, with Maki retiring to the pits for that reason. Greg Peterson smoothly held onto the top spot, with brother Doug right behind Szymanskyj. His dream of the family duel ended one lap later, as Adam Regnier spoiled that hope, moving along side and by Doug, then Szymanskyj, all by lap twenty. Then setting his sights on the leader, it was a great race for the top spot, with Peterson looking like he'd pull off a win. But one lap later for the first time since taking the lead, a slight bobble, gave Regnier the momentum he needed to get by the leader. Within another go round, things really changed as John Janssen and fast qualifier Jeff Lorenz worked their way passed Peterson. It was an excellent final lap, with Regnier taking the win, over Janssen, Lorenz, Greg Peterson, Mike Kooi, Doug Peterson, Bell and Jermey Tess in this non stop contest. For the first four laps of the sport truck feature, R.J. Ross and Eric Roberts stayed along side each other dicing for that top spot, before Chad Ross briefly led lap five, only to have Olson fly by. Once in front, the leader scared everyone on lap ten, getting very wide in turn four, but never letting go of the lead. Chad Ross tagged Rolf Tillman , causing the only caution, with five laps to go. Olson held onto the lead, despite numerous challenges from Roberts and then a recovered Tillman. But Olson wanted this win for his son, in his first time behind the wheel since that untimely incident, that took his son's life. Olson came across the line just in front of Tillman, Chad Ross, Roberts and Todd Ross. There was no stopping Gary Kreuger who held onto to win the Wisconsin Allison Legacy series feature. Doug Reichley, Ken Wills, Keith Tolf and Kelly Bires were next. This coming weekend on Friday night the BIC cars and Millennium race series/Jefferson late models will be joined by the Rascal Outlaws, Legend cars and the mini modifieds.
