The Great Lakes Enduro Challenge - 2004


Welcome to The Great Lakes Enduro Challenge.  The possibilities to experience the thrills of auto racing at a minimal cost with an attractive prize purse is what this enduro is all about.  For those fans who watch and pondered if they could ever have the opportunity to experience what it would be like to race, now is the time to get out of the spectator seat and get behind the wheel and get that racing fever pumping through your veins.  Lets face it, Any hobby or sport cost money to be competitive, and motor sports is no exception.  However, The Great Lake Enduro Challenge is an avenue for those desiring to enter the world of auto racing at a minimal cost.
 Drivers, basically you are going to strip a street legal car of any of it's luxuries and go racing.  Follow these few rules regulations and there should not be a whole lot of mystery.  However if you have questions or concerns, it is a good idea to call an official before showing up to the race and going home without the opportunity to compete.  The rules are plainly printed for you to use as a guide. 
Car Eligibility
Any three or four cylinder front wheel drive passenger car with a maximum 104" wheel base.  No turbo chargers, No convertibles, pick-up trucks or vans, or four wheel drive cars.  All wheel steer cars, AWS, must disable rear steer.
Body
All glass must be removed except front windshield.  If Lexan front windshield is used, window bracing must be in place with a minimum of two 3/8" diameter steel bars for safety and support.  All exterior trim including lights, body moldings, mirrors, etc. must be removed.  Drivers door must be bolted, strapped, or welded shut.  Passenger door must remain operational on stock hinges.  Hood and trunks must be secured with hood pins only.  No other latching devices allowed.  Cars equipped with sun roofs must remove glass and cover roof hole with a minimum of 16 gage steel, no aluminum, welded or riveted, NO SCREWS.  Any exterior holes from lights or rust may be covered with aluminum or metal and riveted, NO SCREWS.   Bumpers must be stock as manufactured to that car.  No bracing or reinforcing of bumpers allowed.    Bumpers may be capped with 16 gage steel no wider than the bumper.  Drivers door, passenger door and roof must be painted white.
                                                                    Gas Tanks
 Stock fuel tanks required and mounted in stock location.  If stock fuel tank is located behind rear axle, it must be removed and replaced with fuel cell or marine type tank mounted in the trunk.  Securely fastened with two 1" by 1/16" straps (no plumbers  straps) in each direction bolted through the floor with plates or in a safety constructed frame.  Fuels cells shall not be mounted no closer than 10" form rear panel of car and between frame rails.  No bottom draw tanks.  Recommend plastic marine/boat tank maximum capacity 6.6 gallons.  Cars equipped with fuel cells must have a sealed protective metal barrier between the driver and the fuel cell, maximum size 8.0 gallons.
Interior


All flammable materials must be removed except drivers seat and full factory dash.  Full factory dash must be kept in place.  The drivers factory door panel must be kept in place.  Driver seat may be changed.  Window nets allowed and recommended.  Stock seat beats with shoulder Strap REQUIRED.  Aftermarket full race harness allowable. A steel protector plate may be added to drivers door.  No cutting or gutting of interior steel panels, door panels or bracing allowed. 
                                                                     Roll Bars
Roll bars or cages not required.  If equipped, it is your responsibility to construct a cage or roll bar capable of protecting you from injury.  2" diameter by .095" thick tubing recommended.  No portion of the roll bar or cage is to pass through the firewall or attach to the frame to stiffen the frame.  The roll cage or roll bar is to mount to the floor pan with steel plates.  Door bars recommended.  If door bars are used, the steel drivers door panel can be removed.
Batteries
A) Stock location and must be securely mounted and tied down.  Top post batteries must be covered to protect from shorting out.
B) Batteries may be relocated and must be securely mounted. Steel to steel tie downs required.  Batteries mounted in passenger compartment must be in a plastic case sufficient to hold the entire acid content of the battery in case of a rollover.
If tech inspection can move the battery at all, you will put it back under the hood.
Brakes
Stock as delivered from manufacture.  No modification.  Must be capable of locking all 4 wheels.  Stock proportioning valves only.
Transmission and Axles
Stock as delivered from manufacture. No modifications.  Working forward and reverse gears.
Exhaust System
Required.  2" Maximum diameter exhaust pipe with muffler.  Catalytic converter may be removed or gutted.  Exhaust system must run from engine to somewhere behind driver under floor pan.  Decibel limit 85.  Penalty laps will be assessed if you lose any part of your exhaust.
Steering and Suspension
Stock as delivered from manufacture.  No modifications or aftermarket performance parts.  Must maintain stock ride attitude.
Cooling System
Stock as delivered from manufacture.  Fan shroud required.  No antifreeze, water only.
Fire Suits
Fire suits recommended.  Full coverage clothing from wrist and ankle to neck required.
Helmets
Required. Minimum DOT approval. SNELL approval suggested.
Tires and Wheels
Passenger tires only.  No regroving, profiling, or recaps.  Must have at least 2/32"  tread remaining on at least two grooves.  All 4 tires must be same size.  Maximum tire size will be 195/70R/15.  Stock type wheels.  No aftermarket wheels. 
Engine
            Stock as delivered from manufacture.  Complete stock motor, NO MODIFICATIONS or after market performance parts allowed. Removal of excess wiring, air compressors, smog pumps, heater and air conditioning boxes and coils may be removed. 
Pit Entry



A Day at The Race
All persons expecting to participate as a driver must be 16 years of age.  All drivers must register and pay an entry fee.
All persons entering the pit area must sign the required releases and registration forms and display the pit pass in plain sight.  Any pit person, or driver,  not registered or fails to sign a release will be removed from the pit area and the driver will be disqualified.
Each pit crew member must also pay an entry fee and must be 16 years of age to enter the pit area.
No pets of any kind will be allowed in the pit area.  No Exceptions.
Car and trailer or hauler will be issued only one pit stall on a first come first served basis.
Starting positions will be set upon each car passing a pre race inspection.  At that time a number will be assigned to your race car.  Your number will change from race to race.  Once your car has passed pre-race inspection it will go to it's starting position and will be impounded at that time.  Drivers or pit crew members will not be able to work on the cars once it has passed inspection.  So drivers, make sure your car is race ready at the time of pre-race inspection.
Employees or officials of The Great Lakes Enduro Challenge are NOT permitted to participate in an event as a driver or a scorer.  No exceptions.
The speed limit in the pit area is slow, 10mph Max. This will be enforced.  Penalty laps will be issued for speeding in the pits.
General Conduct
It is expected that all drivers, pit crew persons, and employees and officials will be treated with respect and professionalism at all times.  Anyone acting irresponsible, fighting, or inappropriate language towards an official or management before, during, or after the event while still on the raceway property, may be subjected to disqualification from that event or suspension of any future events.  Verbal or physical abuse towards any official by a participant will not be tolerated.
No alcohol, beer, or controlled substances  may be consumed prior or during an event in the pit area.  Anyone caught or considered intoxicated by track officials or track medics, will be removed from the pit area, or disqualified if driver.  We expect your full cooperation in this matter.
Drivers will take responsibility for their car, themselves, and their pit crew.
The promoter reserve the right to refuse the entry of any driver, car owner, pit crew member, etc. for any reason.
Shoes, long pants and shirts are required on all persons at all times in the pit area.
If involved in an accident or injury to yourself or pit crew member, you must inform an official  immediately for necessary attention and insurance reporting.  No claims can be made unless reported prior to leaving the raceway property on that day.
If you wish to leave (abandon) your car, please leave the keys, at least two air filled tires with the car.  If you have a title please leave it at the race track office or give to an official.
No refunds will be made if the competitor is unable to start the race for any reason.
No bicycles, skateboards, minibikes, scooters, ATV's or any other motor driven vehicle in the pit area is allowed except for track officials.
No passengers riding on the cars for transportation purposes.  Riders must be in the car.
Cars must remain in their pit stalls unless going to inspection.  There will be no driving around in the pit area.  NO EXCEPTIONS.



The Race Event
Rain or shine the race is on.


No two way radios, scanners, cell phone use, or another radio communication devices allowed in the pit or scoring area.
Each driver is required to have two scorers.  A scorers meeting will be held prior to each event to explain how to score your driver.  A timer will be set in plain view for each scorer to record lap times and counts.  Each score card will be compared for accuracy.


A mandatory drivers meeting will be held prior to the start of the event.
A typical race may be 200 to 300 laps in length.


The race may be ran in a traditional counterclockwise circle or clockwise direction, on wet or dry surface, a road course or any other creative means the promoter desirers.


The first car to complete the required amount of laps will be declared the unofficial winner pending post race inspection and any penalty laps that may have incurred.


There will be one mandatory fuel stop at the half way point.


Driver changes can be permitted as long as the substitute driver checks in with an official of the change or face disqualification.


A JAM TRUCK will be present at the race.  It's purpose is to clear the track and to remove the drivers from any disabled cars on the track. When the jam truck is on the track it has the right-of-way.  It is out there for a reason.  Competitors must yield to the jammer to perform it's task.  If a driver hits the jammer, that driver will be accessed penalty laps or possible disqualification


Cars with flat tires must exit the racing surface as soon as possible and get it replaced.
Cars that are black flagged for loose sheet metal or dragging parts must exit the racing surface and make repairs.
Cars black flagged for rough driving must exit the racing surface and report to an official in the pit for consultation.
Cars leaking fuel will be black flagged.


Cars leaving the racing surface for repairs must report to their pit stall.  Do not perform repairs anywhere else in the pits but in your own pit stall.  And you must either back in or drive straight in parallel to the end of your trailer or hauler, not crossways or you will be penalized laps.  Be kind to the pit stall next to you.  If there is an open pit stall next to you, you still must obey the same rule.


If you become disabled on the track, STAY IN YOU CAR, KEEP SEAT BELTS AND HELMET  ON, DO NOT SMOKE.  The race may still be going on. 


No driver is allowed to get out of their car while on the racing surface unless you are told to do so by an official.
If your car is disabled on the track, it will not be removed until the mandatory fuel stop (if time permits) or at the end of the race.  If you the driver is presumed to be in a dangerous situation, you will be removed from the car but you car will stay on the track.
Post Race Inspection



At the conclusion of the scheduled event, the top finishing cars will report for technical inspection. At that time any necessary checks will be made to the cars for conformity to the rules. THE GREAT LAKES ENDURO CHALLENGE OFFICIALS RESERVES THE RIGHT TO INTERPRET AND EXECUTE THE RULES AND PROCEDURES AS IT SEES FIT WITH THE INTENT OF THE RULE BEING CARRIED OUT. The decision of the officials shall be final, official, and binding.

Prize Money
Pay out will be made as soon as possible following the completion of the event and post race inspection. The pay out is as follows:
First Place-------------$1,500 *
Second Place----------$ 500
Third Place------------$ 250
Fourth Place-----------$ 125
Fifth Place-------------$ 75
Sixth-Tenth Place-----$ 50
* First prize is $1,200 plus $300 for claim. The winner of each event must forfeit the car or forfeit all prize money and trophy.

Rules And Regulations


The rules and regulations set forth herein are designed to provide for the orderly conduct of such racing events and to establish a minimum acceptable requirements for the events. These rules shall govern the condition of all events, and by participating in these events, all participants are deemed to complied with these rules. NO EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED WARRANTY OF SAFETY SHALL RESULT FROM PUBLICATIONS OF OR COMPLIANCE WITH THESE RULES AND/OR REGULATIONS. These rules and regulations are intended as a guide for the conduct of the sport and are in no way a guarantee against injury or death to a participant, spectator, or official. These rules apply to each and every driver and pit crew person.


Although every effort has been made to provide a complete understanding of the rules, developments and circumstances cannot be anticipated at the time the rules are formulated. With this in mind, The Great Lakes Enduro Challenge may modify, change, or add to these rules. The "except in rare instances" (EIRI) rule is applicable and in effect at all times. Remember, If it is not printed, it does not mean it is right or legal. The best suggestion is to call an official before arriving at the race to clarify any question or concerns.
